How to choose a leather briefcase
There are thousands of different type of leather briefcase available, so how do you choose? Of course, you should find one you like the look of, but there are other important considerations. Here are the most important three things to look out for when choosing your briefcase: design, construction, and leather.
Design is the first and most practical concern. Think about what your needs are from your briefcase. What will you need to carry in the briefcase, and how will you carry it. A small slim line briefcase has a very modern silhouette but is just not functional for an attorney that needs to take home their laptop and files every day. So look for a leather briefcase that has sufficient storage space to meet your everyday needs. Also think about what kind of handle you need. If you are just carrying the briefcase short distances, a simple handle is fine. But, for longer hauls get a wheeled briefcase or one with a detachable shoulder strap.
Construction is the second issue and is the key to longevity. Look closely at the details of how the briefcase is put together. Many cheaper briefcases are glued together which does not tend to last as well over the long term as the glue starts to deteriorate. Higher quality briefcases will be stitched. Look for neat tidy stitching with no loose ends. Counter intuitively, the very best leather briefcases will have slightly irregular stitching as they are hand made – but still the stitching should be in short neat stitches.
Type of leather used is the final criteria and is important to a briefcase that exudes class. Look closely at the leather and feel the texture. A nice leather will be a little softer. Also smell the leather and see if you get that nasty chemical smell or that nice natural scent. Finally inspect the grain and see where it is regular and inspect whether it has been made from a single skin.
So find a leather briefcase that you love, but don’t forget the three keys: design, construction, and leather.
