Make Gel Candles from Home in 6 Easy Steps
As compared to ordinary candles, gel candles are slowly attracting the attention of candle enthusiasts and hobbyists. Generally, these candles are quite similar with other types of candles. However, the materials involved do differ. In order to make gel candles, it is significant that you know the nature of the raw material. Unlike wax candles, these types of candles are made from high-percentage mineral oil and a little bit of polymer resin.
In addition, gel wax is classified into three density states namely low, medium and high. Density is often referred to as the state wherein gel waxes can accommodate or tolerate the level of used oil. For instance, the higher the density, the higher the amount of oil that you can use. However, this may lead to thicker gel candles, which in turn are harder to melt and pour.
The same steps are also advised if you want to make gel candles at home. First, you have to prepare the materials namely the gel, wick, containers, fragrance oils and dye. Second, melt the gel using a double boiler or multi-cooker. There is hardly any difference when it comes to using the double-boiler as melting equipment. However, other hobbyists prefer using the multi-cooker as they can directly place the gel inside it and wait for such to melt.
Third, while melting your gel, it is important to avoid using wooden spatulas or stirrers. This is to avoid bubbles from appearing in your finished gel candles. Preferred tools would be plastic or metal stirrers. More so, it is best to buy a thermometer to determine the right amount of temperature while melting the gel.
Fourth, in order to make gel candles, you need to think of bright and pleasant colors. You can always start with white, blue, yellow or green. Using a liquid dye deems fit for gel candles, as it is easier to incorporate in the melted gel mixture. Fifth, adding a fragrance or scent of your choice is also a likely step, since it will enhance the quality of your gel candles. Lastly, it is imperative to cool the candles after pouring the mixture into prepared molds or containers. Suggested time varies but what’s important is that you ensure that the mixture has totally set.
To make gel candles is actually easy. There are so many mediums to work with if you are bent on learning the skill. You can start asking friends or close peers. Think of people who are actually in the candle making business. Either way, what you will learn will help you in developing your interest and passion for what is considered the art of candle making.
